Rivers to Rocks
Dr. Paul Durkin

The Rivers To Rocks (R2R) research lab integrates sedimentology, geomorphology, and stratigraphy to read the sedimentary record of Earth-surface processes to understand the temporal evolution of past environments on Earth. The R2R lab tackles a wide range of projects and time periods, including: i) Cretaceous fluvial systems of western Canada; ii) paleoenvironmental reconstruction of hominin habitat in Pleistocene East-African rift-basin sediments of the archeologically significant Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania; and iii) the impact of recent extreme flooding on the Assiniboine River in southwestern Manitoba. R2R integrates a classic field-based approach to data collection with innovative lab-based technology and analytical methods, including the use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems. The R2R lab produces research that contributes vital spatial and temporal context to dinosaur evolution, behaviour and habitat of early Homo, petroleum reservoir heterogeneity, and risks of extreme floods under a changing climate. The R2R Lab is a core member of the PaleoSed+ Research Group that generates collaborative research in the fields of sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleontology, and applied geology.
